Faculty in the Department of Physics and Astronomy have research interests ranging from the very small (atoms and nanomaterials) to the astonishingly large (galaxies and the universe itself). We study natural phenomena (star formation, Earth’s atmosphere, meteors), as well as various applications of physics in medicine (imaging, radiotherapy) and technology (solar cells, graphene, nanofabrication, optoelectronic devices, biomaterials).

Completion of first-year requirements including the following 2.0 courses, each with a mark of at least 60%:

Physics 1301A/B, Physics 1401A/B, Physics 1501A/B or 80% in Physics 1028A/B and Physics 1302A/B, Physics 1402A/B, Physics 1502A/B or 80% in Physics 1029A/B; or the former Physics 1026

One of Calculus 1000A/B or Calculus 1500A/B or the former 1100A/B and one of Calculus 1501A/B (recommended) or Calculus 1301A/B (with a mark of at least 85%); or Applied Mathematics 1413

Students must complete Mathematics 1600A/B or the former Linear Algebra 1600A/B with a minimum mark of 55% by the end of term one in year 2.

1.5 courses: (Astronomy 2201A/B or Astronomy 2801A/B), Astronomy 3302A/B, Astronomy 3303A/B.
1.0 course: Calculus 2502A/B, Calculus 2503A/B.
0.5 course: Applied Mathematics 2402A or the former Differential Equations 2402A.
2.0 courses: Physics 2101A/B, Physics 2102A/B, Physics 2110A/B and Physics 2910F/G (or the former Physics 2900E).
1.0 course from: Applied Mathematics 2814F/G, Physics 3900F/G/Z, Physics 3926F/G, or the former Applied Mathematics 2813A/B.

Students must also complete Physics 2950Y, Physics 3950Y (non-credit seminar courses).

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
