This is an interdisciplinary program focused on the study of methods for storing, retrieving, organizing, and analyzing biological data. Doing so entails the development of new software tools and techniques for generating and making sense of new useful biological knowledge. This is an elite, intense, and extremely rewarding program at Western.

This module concentrates on the computational aspects of bioinformatics, while at the same time providing students with enough background in the biosciences to appreciate the contexts in which computation is applied. The Honors Specialization in Bioinformatics leads to a degree that is accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Council, the academic arm of the Canadian Information Processing Society, under its interdisciplinary program criteria.

The Honors Specialization in Bioinformatics can be completed only within BSc (Hons) degrees.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
