Software engineering is a systematic and disciplined approach to developing software. It applies both computer science and engineering principles and practices to the creation, operation, and maintenance of software systems. Software engineers specify, design, implement, and maintain innovative software systems.

Common First Year

All first-year students complete a common first year. Courses include: Applied Mathematics — Calculus, Applied Mathematics — Linear Algebra, Business for Engineers, Chemistry, Computer Programming Fundamentals, Introductory Engineering Design and Innovation Studio, Physics, Properties of Materials and Statics. Upon completing Western Engineering’s common first year, students pursue the next three years in Software Engineering with an opportunity to complete an Embedded Systems or Health Informatics Option in fourth year.

Software Engineering Western’s Software Engineering program has a core of disciplines that covers all phases of the software life cycle. Our program offers a solid foundation in computer hardware and computer networks, while exploring the essentials of computer science. Health Informatics Option Health Informatics is the emerging field of collecting, storing, retrieving and presenting health related information. This option provides training on issues related to handling such information as well as issues on security, privacy and integrity

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
