History is the study of all past human activity – social, cultural, economic, political, intellectual, military, legal and anything else you can think of. The range of historical study is limited only by the range of documents and artifacts which have survived to tell us their story.

Historians work with these sources to try to understand the past on its own terms, to learn more about the assumptions, ideas, ambitions, hopes and fears of people living in medieval England or nineteenth-century Canada, Ming China or colonial America. In a History module you will have the opportunity to explore all these societies, and many more. As you develop your own interests you will also be able to focus on a particular period or place, or to focus on themes such as the environment, medicine, technology, and gender.

We are all products of history, both individually and as members of our nations, cultures, or religions. Learn more about the people, ideas, and events in the past which have shaped our present, and which will continue to shape our future.

Completion of first-year requirements with no failures. Students must have an average of at least 70% in 3.0 principal courses, including 1.0 course from History 1201E, History 1401E, History 1601E, History 1801E, History 1803E, History 1805E, History 1807, History 1810E or the former History 1403E and 2.0 additional courses, with no mark in these principal courses below 60%.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
