Spanish at Western is divided into three different programs that represent the rich cultural heritage of the diverse Hispanic world: from courses in language that offer a community service learning option to literature, linguistics, art, music, and digital humanities.

Linguistics is the study of human language. Spanish linguistics focuses on the Spanish language, its sounds, words and sentences, and how those are acquired and used in the real world. In the modules, among other things, you will learn the internal structure of the Spanish language, how the language is acquired by second language learners and how it is used in the Spanish-speaking countries around the world.

Major in Spanish Language and Linguistics:

This is an ideal program if your passion is language in general and the Spanish language in particular. After a thorough grounding in the Spanish language you will acquire knowledge of how language works, the way sentences are structured, how they are pronounced, how language evolves, and how it is learned, all through the medium of Spanish. It constitutes a perfect program to combine with a major in French and/or Linguistics, but also works very well with areas such as computer science or biology. Useful for any career that involves knowledge of language such as language pathology, child language development, or psychology.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
