Spanish at Western is divided into three different programs that represent the rich cultural heritage of the diverse Hispanic world: from courses in language that offer a community service learning option to literature, linguistics, art, music, and digital humanities.

Honors Specialization in Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures

At the end of your studies in this module you will have an excellent grounding in the Spanish language and in-depth understanding of the diversity and richness of the Hispanic World and the connections in time and space that unite us. You will have explored our literature, visual arts, music, and traditions and how this rich culture has impacted our global world. You will also have explored different methodologies, from traditional analysis to digital humanities. This program of study will prepare you for graduate studies and research in Hispanic Studies, or for a career in which an ability to analyze and organize and an understanding of culture and diversity are important.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
