This course provides students enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine more detailed experience in medical research.

Medical Research at Western

This course gives students who are enrolled in the Western Sydney University Doctor of Medicine (MD) the opportunity to take leave of absence from the normal medical course for 12 months full time or 24 months part time, after successfully completing years 1 and 2 of MD, in order to gain a more detailed experience in medical research than is provided in the normal medical course.

Years 1 and 2 of the Bachelor of Medical Research are identical to years 1 and 2 of MD. It is expected that students will return to the medical course on completion of the intercalated year, which will complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Medical Research, but the degree is also available as an exit point for those who do not wish to resume MD.

Students must have Australian Year 12 Higher School Certificate in or outside Australia; International Baccalaureate in Australia; New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), Level 3. English language requirements: IELTS (Academic version): 6.5 overall score, minimum 6.0 in each subtest; TOEFL internet-based score: Total score 82, Writing 21, Speaking 18, Reading 13, Listening 13; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): 58 overall; No communication skills less than 50; Successful completion of three years (Gao San) with a minimum score for entry to Second Tier universities in China from the National Entrance Examination (Gao Kao) cut off thresholds for Science and the relevant province, or successful completion of the first year of a Bachelor’s degree at a recognized university.
