This concentration is designed for practicing music educators who wish to advance their knowledge and skills in both music and music pedagogy. An undergraduate degree in music education is required with two years teaching experience in a school setting. The program is intended to build on the student’s understanding of teaching pedagogy in any area of music education (general, choral or instrumental), strengthen the philosophical underpinnings of that teaching, bring to light opportunities for action research within a school setting, and provide additional areas of exploration including applied instrumental or vocal study, conducting technique, music theory and music history.

Core music education courses are offered both in the summer and evenings, some provided in online format. Other courses are offered during the academic year in late afternoon and evening hours.

Applicants for admission to the UWM Graduate School must have the following: A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as determined by the UWM Centre on International Education, from a regionally accredited institution, completed before the first term of enrolment in the Graduate School. Students applying to approved integrated bachelor’s/master’s programs are exempt from this requirement, A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or an equivalent measure on a grading system that does not use a 4.0 scale. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results with a minimum required score of 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) and a minimum recommended sub-score of 18 in each skill). IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results with a minimum required score of 6.5, with minimum recommended sub-score of 6.0 in each skill.
