Medieval culture, which flourished in Europe from about CE 300-1500, and has analogues in many non-European cultures, lends itself well to interdisciplinary study. This Program seeks to train students in the principles, methods, and problems of Medieval Studies and to introduce them to the written, visual, and material sources required for a thoughtful, critical study of the medieval world.

Medieval Studies offers Honours, Major, General and Minor programs leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Students may also undertake the Major in Medieval Studies together with a Major Program in another department (see Double Major Program) or with a Major in another faculty (see Interfaculty Program). By completing the requirements for the General Program together with a Major or Honours Program in another department or faculty, students may obtain a Minor.

Honours

In the Honours Program in Medieval Studies, students have the opportunity to work more independently and intensively on a special research essay. The graduating essay will be done under the guidance of an individual tutor assigned in the final year of the degree.

International students must complete 12 years or more of academic preparation and graduate from a recognized senior secondary school program. University entrance examinations required in the home country may also be requested. In addition, students must satisfy UVic’s English Language Proficiency Requirement (ENPR). One year of postsecondary studies at a recognized university. A score of 4 or higher on IB Higher Level English A. English Language Proficiency Requirement: TOEFL: Minimum score of 90 (20 per section); IELTS: Minimum overall band score of 6.5 (6.0 per component); CAEL: Minimum band score of 70 (60 per component); UVIC’S UNIVERSITY ADMISSION PREPARATION: Completion of UAP course with 80% or higher.
