The UTSA Master of Social Work (MSW) program prepares students for advanced social work practice. Graduates work in professional positions serving diverse individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities (see National Association of Social Workers website for more information about the profession and career opportunities). Students graduating from the program demonstrate a commitment to cultural competence, multidimensional contextual practice, social responsibility, and transformative social work.

The Department of Social Work hosts top-tier researchers and educators focused on empowering our students to be transformative culturally competent social workers. Our accredited program offers a Master in Social Work degree for part-time or full-time students. We offer primarily evening classes, with some day classes, to provide options for students with a variety of schedules.

Our program mission: To serve as catalysts for transformational culturally competent social work through research, education and service within a local-global context.

We are proud of our community partnerships in San Antonio and beyond, which create a wide range of possibilities for student practicum experiences. In addition to engaging with the community, students engage with dedicated faculty and with one another through campus organizations. On the state licensing exam, students and alumni from our program have a passing rate that is significantly higher than the national passage rate. Our alumni are transforming lives and organizations in San Antonio and across the country.

Degree Options:

The Department offers two degree options: the 60-hour curriculum available to those students who have undergraduate degrees in something other than social work; and the 36-hour curriculum for those students who have a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW) from a social work program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. These students may enter the program as an advanced standing student, although additional admissions documents will be required. Transfer students from an accredited MSW program are also considered for acceptance into the program.

Students may enter the MSW program either full-time or part-time during the fall or spring semesters. Courses are offered primarily during evening hours, with a limited number of day courses, to accommodate a range of student work schedules.

Students in the 60-hour program complete 900 clock hours of field practicum, and those in the 36-hour program complete 450 hours.

The Master of Social Work degree program consists of two program tracks: a 60-semester-credit-hour program for students with undergraduate degrees that are not in social work, and a 36-semester-credit-hour program for students with undergraduate degrees in social work or at least 24 hours of graduate credit in social work.

36-hour program: Applicants for this program must have a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) awarded from a CSWE-accredited program or have successfully completed a minimum of 24 graduate semester credit hours in a CSWE-accredited MSW program. The minimum number of semester credit hours required for the degree, exclusive of coursework or other study required to remove deficiencies or to complete additional degree requirements not transferred, is 36 graduate credit hours.
60-hour program: Applicants for this program must have a bachelor’s degree. The minimum number of semester credit hours required for the degree, exclusive of coursework or other study required to remove deficiencies, is 60 graduate credit hours.

The 36-hour program is available only to students who have earned a BSW degree or successfully completed a minimum of 24 graduate semester hours from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
