The Bachelor of Social Work at UNBC is designed to prepare students for beginning level generalised social work practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. The program's orientation places emphasis on Social Work in northern and remote areas, First Nations, women and the human services, and community practice and research. Analyses of class, gender and race relations are considered central to the Social Work program. As mandated by its accrediting body, the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE), and the relevant Social Work Codes of Ethics, Social Work at UNBC provides a professional program that advocates for justice and equality, and equips graduates with the intellectual, analytical, practical and professional skills needed to promote beneficial change.

BSW: First Nations Specialization

The First Nations Specialization provides a program of study that prepares students for practice with First Nations people, while also satisfying the general practice criteria required for UNBC BSW accreditation and for designation as a Registered Social Worker (RSW).

Students must meet all prerequisites for entry into the UNBC BSW program, and must be accepted into the program. The fourth-year practicum takes place in a First Nations setting.

Completion of the specialization is noted on the student's transcript. Note: This Specialization is distinct from “Areas of Specialization” within a major as set out in Academic Regulation 24 (Minors, Areas of Specialization and Areas of Focus).

Students who complete their studies at an appropriate high school and/or recognized post-secondary institution will be considered for admission. Students must also have a Graduation Certificate - Academic Senior Middle School. English Language Scores: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 90 or higher in the internet-based test, with not less than 20 in each of the Reading, Listening, Writing or Speaking components; Score of at least 230 in the computer based or at least 570 in the paper based test. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic score of at least 6.5 overall, with not less than 6.0 in any of the four modules. MELAB score of 80, with a minimum 3 on the Speaking Rating Scale. CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) or the CAEL CE Assessment score of at least 70, with no subtest below 60. A grade of B or better on Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE). PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): 65 overall score, with 60 reading, 60 writing, 60 listening, and 60 speaking.
