The Spanish program strives to engage students in the processes of critical reading and writing, taking as the object of study the literary, linguistic, cultural and cinematic heritage of Spain and Latin America. To develop students’ communicative skills, the program provides instruction that assists students in acquiring and refining the ability to speak, understand, read and write the Spanish language. Moreover, the program’s literature courses enable students to examine a wide range of periods and genres, and to tailor their plans of study according to their specific interest.

Exchange opportunities include traveling to Latin America or Spain to take courses as part of the program

Professional opportunities

The Spanish program, alone or in combination with other major programs, may lead to advanced study of the language or literature of Spain and Latin America, and to careers not only in teaching, but also in other professions such as interpretation, translation, journalism, library science, law, medicine, and in government (international affairs), social service, or business.

The development of closer Canadian ties with Spain and Latin America is extending the range of career opportunities through various international organizations.

Other English language requirements accepted: TOEFL paper based score of 550; Achieve minimum scores of 4.5 in Reading, 4.5 in Listening, and 4.0 in Writing on the CanTEST (Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees); Achieve a minimum score of 6.5 based upon the Academic Module on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System); Achieve a minimum score of 80 on the MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) offered by the University of Michigan; Achieve a minimum grade of C in the University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.Achieve a score of 60 or more in the CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment); Achieve a minimum of 58% in the Pearson Test of English.Achieve a minimum of 65% in Level 5 of the direct entry English program (also known as Intensive Academic English Program orIAEP), as taught by the English Language Centre of the University of Manitoba.
