Why Study General Nursing at UL?

General nursing is a broad area of practice and involves caring for people with acute and long-term illness in hospital and community settings. Nurses educate and help patients to regain independence and cope with changing health needs.

The B.Sc. Nursing (General) is a full-time four-year degree offered by the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, the University of Limerick in conjunction with the Health Service Executive West (Limerick, Clare and Tipperary North). On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to present for registration with An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann and practise as a Registered General Nurse (R.G.N.).

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery has received approval from An Board Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann for the programme. This course supports your development and will give you the knowledge and skills to become a registered general nurse. Career Prospects

As our health services are constantly developing, nurses play a major contribution in developing and enhancing care to patients in acute and community settings. This programme provides graduates with the knowledge and experience to contribute effectively in Community and Health Care Services.

Upon registration with An Board Altranais, there are many different employment and career opportunities available to you. Nurses can work and/or specialise in medical, surgical, care of the older person, gynaecology, theatre or other such areas. Many nurses work as community nurses and general practice nurses. Other career options include midwifery, paediatric nursing, education or management.
