ELECTRONIC MEDIA

The electronic media concentration prepares you for a career in television or radio broadcasting. From your first semester here, you’ll have hands-on experience in addition to classroom work, including writing, production, and on-air talent. UIndy TV-5 is broadcast across public access cable television stations all over the Indianapolis area, while WICR-FM (88.7) is our noncommercial public radio station. The tailored nature of this program allows you to focus your education in TV, radio, or both.

HUMAN COMMUNICATION

No matter what career path you take, being a good communicator will be to your advantage, whether it’s verbal, nonverbal, or written communication. The human communication concentration provides you with a well-rounded understanding of rhetoric and audience awareness, giving you the skills to be an effective communicator. Hands-on learning opportunities include being part of UIndy’s award-winning speech team, which competes around the state and nation.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

As a public relations professional, you will use strategic communication to build and maintain positive relationships with all parties associated with a company or organization. And with your education at UIndy, you will come out with professional experience on your resume thanks to our award-winning, full-service PR agency, Top Dog Communication. All PR students work on projects for real clients through this agency and also have opportunities for internships thanks to our proximity to downtown Indianapolis.

JOURNALISM

To thrive as a journalist, you must be able to master both traditional newsgathering and writing skills as well as the digital-media skills needed for the mobile world. UIndy’s award-winning journalism program fosters professional and academic growth as you get prepared for the evolving field of mass media and mass communication. You’ll get practical experience in reporting, writing, editing, photography, and layout/design by working for The Reflector, UIndy’s student-run online and print newspaper.

SPORTS INFORMATION

The sports information concentration lets you combine your love of the game with your talents in communication. Specifically, a sports information specialist relies on PR and journalism skills, preparing you for responsibilities such as compiling statistics, writing press releases, or coordinating interviews with the media. Having access to the many professional teams located right here in Indianapolis enhances your academic experience.
