The C.T. Bauer College of Business and the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston offer a concurrent degree program that enables students to prepare for careers in which the understanding of both engineering science and business studies is critical. This program provides students with the opportunity to complete the degree requirements for the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Industrial Engineering in a shorter period of time than if the two degrees were pursued separately.

The MIE/MBA course requirements for this degree objective are the same as for the MIE, except that up to four courses from the C. T. Bauer College of Business are accepted as electives. The intent of this program is that, upon completion of the requirements for each degree, the student shall be awarded the two degrees simultaneously.

Program Requirements & Curriculum Overview

The C. T. Bauer College of Business requires concurrent degree program students to complete the 21 hours of core MBA courses and an additional 15 hours of the C. T. Bauer College of Business graduate electives.

The Cullen College of Engineering requires the student to complete 18 hours of Industrial Engineering courses.

Upon completion of these curriculum requirements for both degrees, 12 semester hours from the graduate business curriculum will apply toward the MIE degree, enabling the student to complete the requirements for both degrees. Students should contact the MIE/MBA Directors for recommendations on the sequencing of courses from the two programs.

To graduate, the student must meet all graduation requirements of both colleges. Courses taken from either college will be counted towards the degree from the other college ONLY WHEN the student has completed all requirements and is eligible to receive both degrees. Graduation with both degrees must occur in the same semester.

All graduate students are required to provide proof of the attainment of a Bachelor’s degree before enrolling at the University of Houston. English Language Proficiency Requirements: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - The minimum TOEFL score required is 79 for the internet-based test. The minimum TOEFL score for the new revised paper-based exam is: Reading 20, Listening 20, and Writing 20. IELTS (International English Language Testing Service): The minimum IELTS score required is an overall score of a 6.5.
