About the College

The College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences (CALS) mirrors the same arrangement of liberal arts that were assembled in the ancient Greek academy, where they reflected the higher concerns of free citizens, and the pursuit of which were understood to liberate the spirit.

Because CALS also offers a tremendous proportion of the core curriculum, we also serve students across the entire university.

The Master of Arts in Public History provides training in the research methods and practical skills needed for work in archives, museums, historic preservation, and other areas of public history. The program stresses preparation in digital skills in each part of the curriculum. The MA degree has three components: a core segment with internship and thesis, a traditional history segment, and an applied segment. Professionals in the field teach the applied courses. In each segment students combine theoretical knowledge and historical analysis with practical projects.

Current students are working as Graduate Assistants at the Clinton Presidential Library, the Center for Arkansas History and Culture, the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Butler Center for Arkansas History and Culture (part of the Central Arkansas Library System), and the Historic Preservation Program of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

Graduates of UALR’s M.A. in Public History have recently accepted positions at the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Arkansas History Commission (the Arkansas state archives), the Center for Arkansas History and Culture, the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, the Old State House Museum, the Mosaic Templers Cultural Center, and the Peace Jam Foundation in Colorado.
