Why is this course for me?

Plant Biology is the scientific study of plants, fungi and algae. Plants are vital for supporting and maintaining the atmospheric and environmental conditions required for all life on Earth. They are the mainstay of human and animal diets, while also providing pharmaceuticals, timber, paper and clothing. Plants are being exploited as sources of renewable energy and biofuels, and make an important contribution to measures aimed at reducing the effects of climate change. A key to the further development of plants for practical or economic use is an improved understanding of metabolic and developmental processes and their interactions with environmental factors.

Career & Graduate Study Opportunities

Plant Biology graduates have obtained positions as:

Plant and environmental scientists
Pollution biologists
Molecular geneticists and cell biologists
Agronomists, horticulturalists, foresters, park rangers
Environmental consultants
Wildlife, conservation, biodiversity or heritage officers

Graduates are also eligible to pursue MSc programmes in UCD in Evolutionary Biology, World Heritage Management and Plant Biology and Biotechnology, in addition to PhD programmes both in Ireland and abroad.

Students must have Award of Regional Ministry of Education/Municipal Education Commission (or equivalent) approved Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate and GaoKao result. In some circumstances the Huikao may be acceptable. Students must have Cambridge A Level: At least three subjects at A Level Grade C and three other subjects at GCSE Level Grade C. English language requirements: IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version; A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +, a minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT); Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
