Why is this course for me?

All materials and living things consist of atoms and molecules that are linked together in many different ways. Chemistry is a study of these, how they form and react. Life, metabolism, pharmaceuticals, forensic analysis and the development of new energy supplies, computer chips and medical devices: none of these can be fully developed or understood without chemistry.

The pharmaceutical industry is one of the largest in Ireland, and UCD Chemistry graduates work in the following:

Analytical roles in laboratories on the synthesis, testing and analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients, medicines and medical devices
Research chemist roles in laboratories in research and development
Management and supervisory roles in regulatory affairs, production and validation

The semiconductor and medical device and energy industries also hire a significant number of materials chemists, and graduates would be involved in:

Semiconductor processing
Effluent and raw materials monitoring
Air and water quality measurements

Chemistry graduates also pursue PhDs in Ireland or abroad in areas as diverse as biological aspects of nanoscience, novel material synthesis, energy generation and polymer chemistry.

Students must have Award of Regional Ministry of Education/Municipal Education Commission (or equivalent) approved Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate and GaoKao result. In some circumstances the Huikao may be acceptable. Students must have Cambridge A Level: At least three subjects at A Level Grade C and three other subjects at GCSE Level Grade C. UCD requires Baccalauréat de l'Enseignement Secondaire + 1 year at a recognised university (Diplôme de … (plus professional field); Diplôme d'Etudes Supérieures; Diplôme d'Ingénieur/d'Architecte d'Etat or Licence). English language requirements: IELTS - An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version; A minimum score of 600 in the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), with Test of Written English at 475 +, a minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (IBT); Pearson English Language Text: Minimum of 63 and at least 59 for each item in the Communicative Skills section.
