With growing demand worldwide for lawyers qualified in more than one jurisdiction, this four-year double degree programme involves two years of study at UCL and two years at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). This will lead to the award of two Bachelor of Laws degrees - an LLB from UCL and an LLB from HKU.

Your learning

At both UCL and HKU, you will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, and tutorials with approximately 8 (UCL) to 10 (HKU) students. We encourage substantial student participation and discussion in seminars and tutorials on the basis of prepared work. Considerable emphasis is placed on small group teaching where you will benefit from individual attention and advice. At HKU, you will also be exposed to a range of inter-disciplinary and subjects to widen your horizon.

Each week during years 1 and 2 of the programme, students will attend at least four x two-hour lectures and two x 1 hour small group tutorials in terms 1 and 2. In addition to formal learning and teaching events such as lectures, seminars and tutorials, you will have to undertake independent private study. Whilst everybody is different, we expect you to dedicate about 30 hours of private study per week. It may be more some weeks. Many students organise informal study groups and find working with colleagues helpful.

Assessment

You are required to pass written assessments each year for each of your modules at UCL. Some modules are assessed by way of presentation, for example, too. assessment is similar at HKU, save that most courses are arranged on a semester basis (with two semesters). Most senior year electives are assessed by one or more research papers.

Careers

As a law student, you will be encouraged to develop a critical awareness of how the law works and how it may be changed, to sharpen your powers of reasoning, and to develop both the technical expertise to solve legal problems and the capacity to determine whether a solution is fair and just.

Law and lawyers operate across borders and London and Hong Kong are recognised as globally leading centres for law. This programme allows students to gain legal knowledge of both jurisdictions.

Parallel to its internationalised curriculum, this programme incorporates placements at both UCL and in Hong Kong to enhance students’ career skills. The wide range of technical capacities and subjects learned throughout your degree will open up many opportunities for you when you graduate.

Many UCL and HKU Laws graduates move directly to further vocational study and train to become solicitors or barristers. Recent graduates have also chosen employment in government, political service and a range of industries. Some have selected to undertake further academic study.
