The purpose of the course is to provide a pre-professional qualification in psychology, which confers eligibility for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and allows a student to proceed to postgraduate training, including higher degrees by research, and to specialise in an area of professional psychology. It is a two year full-time course based on lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes and research projects.

Candidates for admission to the Higher Diploma in Psychology must hold a primary degree, in any discipline normally with at least upper second-class honors. Application for entry is not via the CAO system.

Students will cover the following areas of psychology, as required for professional accreditation:

  • Biological basis of behaviour
  • Cognitive psychology
  • Research design, quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Developmental and lifespan psychology
  • Social psychology
  • Personality and individual differences

Students are evaluated by course work assessment throughout the year, by written examination papers at the end of each year of the course, and by research project in the second year. The student must complete all the work prescribed.

Students must have completed high school; Minimum Entry Requirements: Three subjects at Grade 5 at Higher Level and Three subjects at Grade 4 at Standard Level. Students must present English, Mathematics and a language other than English as well as any course specific requirements. TOEFL: Internet based 90 (with a written score of 21). University of Cambridge: 180+ on Cambridge English scale with no less than 175 in each skill and use of English Proficiency Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2), Advanced Certificate, Grade C or better (CEFR Level C1 or C2), First Certificate Grade A (CEFR Level C1); IELTS: (Academic version) 6.5 (no individual band below 6); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE Academic: a minimum score of 63 (with no section score below 59). IB points: 28 - 40
