What is meant by Ghaeilge Modern Irish?

The language has been called Ghaeilge Modern Irish ’since the year 1200 to the present day. In this course literature is read from all parts of the period and the development of the language is studied. There is also a special study of modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic.

Why would you choose Modern Irish in Trinity College?

The staff of the Irish department is renowned in the areas where they work as students and are publishing regularly. The Department also has a reputation for being friendly, which our students really enjoy. The number of students is small enough to make it easy for the students to get to know each other. The Irish Students' Association is very active; the College has a very popular Irish language residential scheme. In total, we are a small minority in the center of the capital.

Jobs

Modern Irish speakers have a very wide range of careers here. These include many teachers, journalists (particularly in the Irish language media) and people with other media jobs - television, music, animation, radio and the internet. The number of people getting jobs as interpreters and translators has increased, some of them abroad. We also have university lecturers and librarians, and other former students working in the public service, business and marketing.

What will you learn?

Your course will be taught through the medium of Irish. You will learn about all aspects of Modern Irish: from the Fianna in the 13th century to Máirtín Ó Cadhain and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill today. You will greatly enhance your ability to speak and write Irish, and you will study formally the correct use of the language. You will have the opportunity to attend lectures on: storytelling, the social history of the language, folklore, the poetry of the school, the Fianna and all the modern literature, ie. short stories, drama, novels, autobiographies and poetry. You must have two months in the Gaeltacht in Ireland as part of your course. A special feature of the Modern Irish course in Trinity College is that you will have the opportunity to spend three years with Scottish Gaelic (Gaelic). You will also have the opportunity to spend a period in the Scottish Gaeltacht.
