Western Australia’s marine environment is a biodiversity hot spot with up to 80 per cent of fish, invertebrates and other organisms found nowhere else in the world, making WA an ideal living laboratory for your studies.

This major includes marine biology and ecology, marine and coastal management, and oceanography. It combines knowledge of marine aquatic life with a solid understanding of the physical environment. Through experimental design and research, you’ll learn to appreciate the complex interactions that occur in marine ecosystems. It is envisaged that there will be up to three overnight field trips (cost of food and accommodation of up to $500 for around 10 nights to be paid by the student).

Career Pathways

Graduates are employed in fisheries and marine conservation agencies at state and federal levels (such as the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions), consulting firms, resources industry, fishing industry, agencies such as Greenpeace and Reef Check, and in research at CSIRO, the Oceans Institute and universities.

Further Study

As an honors student in Marine Science, you will conduct research into the structure and/or functioning of the relatively understudied marine ecosystem. Research projects range from marine conservation and fisheries management through community and population ecology and behavior to physical and biological oceanography or coastal management. You may study near-shore benthic habitats or the open oceans or even the deep-sea, either collecting data yourself or analyzing that gathered remotely by video or sonic recorders. In doing so you will acquire skills in critical thinking, experimental design and analysis, scientific writing and public presentation. This will equip you for entry into postgraduate research programs or workplaces such as environmental consultancies or local and national government agencies.

Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Australian High School (or equivalent). Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; GCE A-level - Minimum grade E in English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature. IELTS - Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (must include Academic Reading and Writing modules); PTE - An overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 59 in the speaking and writing sections, and no less than 54 in the listening and reading sections. TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT): An overall score of 82 with a minimum score of: 22 in the Writing section; 18 in the Reading section; 20 in the Speaking section; and 20 in the Listening section.
