Psychology is a fascinating and diverse area of study that touches on many aspects of daily life – seeking to answer questions about how and why people behave the way they do. The Psychology in Society major helps you build a scientific understanding of human behaviour and its underlying psychological processes. The major has a particular emphasis on developmental psychology, social psychology, intelligence and personality and abnormal psychology.

In particular, this major looks at the measurement of psychological abilities such as intelligence, how these abilities develop through the life span and on the processes that govern the relationships between people and groups in society.

Career Pathways

Psychology is relevant to almost any human endeavour, which means a psychology degree, or some complementary psychology studies, are relevant not only for traditional psychology careers, but for a wide range of careers. For example, there are psychologists designing cockpits for NASA, computer software interfaces, personnel selection systems, or age-appropriate toys; psychologists develop market research strategies, or train people in a variety of settings.

Further Study

Honours is an intensive year intended to prepare you for the wide range of professional postgraduate training programs and/or a research career. It includes a substantial individual research project in addition to coursework units.

Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Australian High School (or equivalent). Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; GCE A-level - Minimum grade E in English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature. IELTS - Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (must include Academic Reading and Writing modules); PTE - An overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 59 in the speaking and writing sections, and no less than 54 in the listening and reading sections. TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT): An overall score of 82 with a minimum score of: 22 in the Writing section; 18 in the Reading section; 20 in the Speaking section; and 20 in the Listening section.
