The Trademark Outcome (TO) that distinguishes our program graduates for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (DHH) program is: The candidate in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program will, upon completion, be able to conduct an assistive technology evaluation with and provide instruction to a student with a hearing impairment using collaborative consultation.

Program Description

The Texas Tech Deaf Education program prepares students to take the state examination that will allow them to become certified to teach students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The certification program includes 27 hours of graduate coursework. The Master's Program requires 36 hours of graduate coursework.

Standards

The Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program is guided by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Initial and Advanced Deaf and Hard of Hearing Knowledge and Skills and the Texas State Board for Educator Certification Standards for Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Programs Offered

M.Ed. in Special Education with a specialization in Deaf and Hard of Hearing. A Deaf and Hard of Hearing certification preparation program is also available (prepares students for state exam to become a teacher of students who are deaf/hard of hearing). Both programs offered online.

Career Opportunities With This Degree

After becoming certified to teach students who are deaf, graduates of this program may work in a public-school setting as a teacher in a deaf education classroom, as an itinerant teacher of the deaf, or as a teacher at a residential school for students who have a hearing impairment.

Students who have already earned a Bachelor's degree and wish to continue their education at the Master's level. English Language Scores: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - The minimum TOEFL score required to show proof of English Proficiency is 550 (paper-based version) or 79 (internet-based version); International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) - The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - The minimum required PTE Academic score is 60; Cambridge C2 Proficiency Test (Cambridge CPE) – The minimum required Cambridge CPE grade is a score of 180 or above. Cambridge C1 Advanced Proficiency Test (CambridgeCAE) – The minimum required Cambridge CAE grade is a score of 175 or above.
