The Trademark Outcome (TO) that distinguishes our program graduates for the Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Program is: The candidate in the Orientation and Mobility Program will, upon completion, be able to conduct an assistive technology evaluation with and provide instruction to a student with a visual impairment using collaborative consultation.

Program Description

The Orientation and Mobility Program is a 27-credit hour, distance hybrid program. Students in the Orientation and Mobility Program can obtain an Orientation and Mobility National Certification only or can also get a Master's Degree in Special Education with a concentration in Orientation and Mobility. A Bachelor's Degree in any area is required. The purpose is to prepare certified orientation and mobility specialists to provide orientation and mobility services to individuals with blindness or low vision.

The Orientation and Mobility program is a hybrid program. Most classes are offered online. Two required courses are only offered as face-to-face courses in Lubbock during the summer, and two of the online courses have a required weekend component. The internship course may require students to travel away from their homes.

Career Opportunities With This Degree

Orientation and mobility specialists can be employed in public schools, rehabilitation agencies serving people with blindness or low vision, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and as private contractors.

Students who have already earned a Bachelor's degree and wish to continue their education at the Master's level. English Language Scores: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - The minimum TOEFL score required to show proof of English Proficiency is 550 (paper-based version) or 79 (internet-based version); International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) - The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - The minimum required PTE Academic score is 60; Cambridge C2 Proficiency Test (Cambridge CPE) – The minimum required Cambridge CPE grade is a score of 180 or above. Cambridge C1 Advanced Proficiency Test (CambridgeCAE) – The minimum required Cambridge CAE grade is a score of 175 or above.
