This degree program is offered in partnership with the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). Application for admission to the program must be made to UTM through the Ontario Universities Application Centre. This program has a September start date.

Students from around the world enrol in this unique four-year program, which combines hands-on studio work at Sheridan with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and Art History from the University of Toronto Mississauga. You'll attend both institutions concurrently, studying the visual arts across societies and centuries while you develop an artistic identity of your own.

Art

At Sheridan, discover a range of personal approaches to visual expression. Begin studio work in your first semester, and complete problem-based assignments in six studios: drawing, painting, sculpture/installation, print media, design and photography. In upper-level studios, refine your expertise by developing a body of self-directed artwork in a class environment of discussion and exchange.

Art history

At UTM, take Art History courses that span from the ancient to the contemporary worlds. Learn different approaches to the analysis and interpretation of artefacts and understand the role of visual creativity in shaping cultures and communities. Additionally, learn about the history and methods of the discipline and have the opportunity to take courses in curatorial studies.

Career Opportunities

The Sheridan Art and Art History (Honours Bachelor of Arts) program was originally conceived to train art teachers for primary, secondary and postsecondary schools. Teaching remains a popular career choice for program graduates, but many other opportunities beckon as well, some requiring further study at the master's level. A number of graduates are practicing artists who exhibit their work in artist-run, public and private galleries, both nationally and internationally. Others have pursued graduate studies in studio art, art history, conservation, or related fields in the humanities, leading to an MFA, MA or PhD.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of their program, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

• Follow current health and safety practices in the studio and when handling materials and equipment.
• Further develop the technical and conceptual skills acquired in previous years.
• Use specific tools, technology, techniques and media to achieve personal artistic or creative goals.
• Articulate a critical awareness of the values associated with their choice of imagery, formal elements or methods of construction.
• Apply research in the development of a resolved artwork applicable to professional-level studio practice.
• Use a critical vocabulary in one-on-one exchange with the professor and in critiques that reflects on the discipline as well as on broader interdisciplinary and cultural contexts.
• Write clear artist statements.
• Identify the artistic intentions of the work of other students.
• Engage in critiques to critically assess their own work as well as the work of their peers.
• Speak on historical and contemporary art practices that relate to their own research interests.
