Art and Design at Saint Michael's College is focused on the belief that fine art and design are interconnected disciplines that will help students to find their creative paths. With a wide range of courses that include Graphic Design, Sculpture, Painting and Drawing, as well as Art and Ecology, Animation and Motion Graphics, Mixed Media, and Design for Print, students at St. Mike's are encouraged to develop the skills and knowledge vital to careers in the art and design-related fields.

After completing the core courses, students can focus on fine art or design or both. Graduating seniors exhibit a significant body of original work in the gallery of the McCarthy Art Center as a capstone experience of the major. Scholarship opportunities are available to incoming and returning students through the Fairbanks-Paulin and McCarthy Scholarship programs.

Graduate schools attended by our majors include the Rhode Island School of Design, Pratt Institute, Hunter College, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

You will take courses that explore a variety of mediums such as oil paint, digital video, and mixed media sculpture. You'll have the opportunity to examine art history spanning from ancient cave painting to contemporary performance art. You'll take courses as diverse as life drawing, digital imaging, experimental painting, site and installation art, and oil painting. Our expanded design courses will allow you to take classes on animation and motion graphics and design for print. You will also have the opportunity to study ceramics, digital photography, and other artistic media as electives.

Application must have completed a high school record and strength of college preparatory curriculum (including the senior year of high school). Applicants should have at least sixteen Carnegie Units of college preparatory course work in high school including some combination of the following (in order of importance). Four years of English; While courses like speech and other English electives are interesting, students are recommended to take those in addition to (not as replacements for) English courses with a strong emphasis on writing and the reading of literature. Two to three years of the same foreign language; A minimum of two are required, but it is highly recommended that applicants pursue as many years of language as possible. Three to four years of theoretical mathematics; Three to four years of science, including at least two lab sciences; Three to four years of history and social sciences. English language requirement: IELTS score 6.5, TOEFL internet based score 79, PTE A score 54.
