The French major prepares students to teach at the secondary or K-12 level. It requires completion of the 30 credit hour major described below, completion of a minor in an approved department and completion of professional development courses in Modern Foreign Languages and in the College of Education (see College of Education section of the catalog).

It is strongly recommended that a minimum of 6 credit hours be taken abroad in a country where the language of study is spoken. These 6 credit hours can be taken to fulfill required or elective courses in the major with instructor approval.

All foreign language majors or minors who are candidates for teacher certification at any level must also pass the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) with a minimum rating of Advanced Low.

FREN 311 - Advanced French 4 cr
FREN 315 - Advanced French 4 cr
FREN 313 - Advanced French 4 cr
FREN 314 - Advanced French 4 cr

Required Courses (16 cr)

FREN 411 - Oral Communication 4 cr
FREN 412 - Written Communication 4 cr
FREN 413 - France and the French-Speaking World 4 cr
FREN 414 - French/English Translation 4 cr

Additional Electives

Additional credits in FREN courses numbered 300 or greater to total a minimum of 30 credits.

Required Course(s) for Certification

In addition to 30 credits in French, students must complete College of Education Secondary Education courses and one of the following Language Methods requirements.

MFL 465 - Elem Foreign Language Methods 3 cr

Applicants must currently be a junior or senior in high school (with or without college credits), or have graduated high school and have taken no college courses. We strongly recommend high school students take a rigorous college preparatory curriculum prior to enrolling at SVSU. The primary core includes: 4 years of English; 3 years of mathematics (through second year algebra); 3 years of natural sciences (at least two years of biology, chemistry, or physics); 3 years of social sciences; 2 years of the same foreign language. Minimum Language Requirements: Minimum GPA: 2.0; TOEFL- IBT: 61; IELTS: 5.5; PTE: 45.
