Media Arts is an innovative program that combines the study of communications theory and media production with the educational tradition of the liberal arts. Students majoring in Media Arts examine the theories and concepts behind contemporary communications and media; learning to analyze films, genres, directors, and hone critical writing skills. Magazine and newspaper writing and production are an integral part of the journalism program.

What are my career options with a Media Arts degree?

Media Arts graduates are prepared to enter the fields of journalism, film, television, and the performing arts with a wide breadth of skill and knowledge. They have the artistic, critical and technical skills necessary to succeed in today's job market as ethically and socially aware professional communicators. SHU’s close proximity to the New York City/Tri state area as well as businesses throughout Fairfield County, gives students the opportunity to work at high profile companies such as ABC News, NBC, CBS, and MTV in addition to many other impressive corporations that conveniently neighbor Sacred Heart University.

Media Arts Learning Outcomes

• Apply analytical methods to be active, critical consumers of mass media texts.
• Analyze ethical issues relevant to the production and distribution of mass media texts.
• Analyze the relationship between democracy and media systems.
• Work effectively in groups as both leaders and collaborators.
• Communicate and integrate ideas in oral, written, and audiovisual form.
• Demonstrate technical skills for creating multimedia artifacts, performances and/or productions.

Performing Arts Concentration

The concentration in Performing Arts is designed to give students the opportunity to combine their love of performance with the theory and practice of media studies. Majors who choose this concentration will take courses in Communication and Media Studies as well as Music, Theater and Dance. A Media Arts major with a concentration in Performing Arts moves through the following curriculum:

One PA Foundations Course:

• DA 100: Dance History 3 CR
• THR 101: Introduction to Theater 3 CR
• MU 125: Music in the Performing Arts 3 CR

One PA Elective (3 credits total)

• Dance Classes (ex. ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, musical theater, ballroom) (3 credits each)
• Music Classes (3 credits)
• Theater Classes (ex. acting, acting for musical theater, voice for musical theater, stage craft, playwriting, directing) (3 credits)

PA Performance (3 credits total, any combination; may retake each class up to 3x)

• Vocal Ensemble 1 CR

Students who pursue the performing arts concentration produce in-depth presentations, performances, and written work in addition to leaving with a capstone project that showcases both their talent and critical thinking ability. Students who move through this concentration will acquire the knowledge and technical skills to pursue careers in the media and arts as they develop a theoretical, aesthetic, and historical understanding of the professional fields.
