The Department of Communication is dedicated to advancing knowledge about communication and its practice in society. The department examines how meaning is created and negotiated in human interaction to address the personal, professional, and public communication challenges and opportunities posed by 21st century life. Our students become leaders in private, public and civil sectors by developing a deep and practical appreciation of how communication shapes the world in which we live. Research from SC&I’s renowned faculty experts examines the complexity of communication processes related to five focal areas: communication and technology, health communication, interpersonal communication, language and social interaction, and organizational communication. SC&I’s students may also acquire knowledge and skills allowing them to pursue careers related to strategic communication and public relations, leadership, health and wellness, relational and family communication, and a range of other options.

Communication and Media Studies is a general specialization in which students take a self-designed course of study that draws across any Master of Communication and Media (MCM) specialization as well as courses in other areas of the School of Communication and Information (SC&I). Courses in organizational communication, mediated communication, health communication, social interaction, knowledge management, and media studies are offered throughout the year.

You can apply for the Master of Communication and Media (MCM) Program in junior or senior year as a Communication Major at Rutgers School of Communication and Information (SC&I) as part of this Dual Degree program.

The MCM degree may be completed within 12 months (of full-time study) or at a personal pace while working full-time. MCM is manageable even if you will be working full time. 60% of MCM students work full time. You can accelerate or decelerate your MCM timing as conditions change in your personal and professional lives. Most MCM students complete their degree in between 12 – 24 months.
