The Division of Computer and Information Sciences in New Brunswick was established at Rutgers in 1969 as the Computer Science Department. Programs leading to a bachelor's degree in computer science are offered by the undergraduate colleges at Rutgers. The faculty of the division is members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Faculty research interests include algorithms, artificial intelligence (with applications to design, genetics, law, and medicine), cognitive science, combinatorics, compilers, complexity theory, computational geometry, computational linguistics, computational molecular biology, data structures, distributed systems, graphics, knowledge representation, machine learning, mathematical programming, mobile computing, networks, numerical analysis, optimization, parallel computing/systems, software engineering, and vision.

Students with outstanding academic performance in the undergraduate Computer Science program at Rutgers are encouraged to apply to this joint program at the end of their Junior year. The program facilitates entry into the graduate program, and provides a plan to allow them to meet the requirements of both the B.Sc. and the M.Sc. degree in a shortened time frame.

The purpose of the program is to:

help attract outstanding undergraduate students to come to Rutgers;

encourage undergraduate students who may not have considered going to graduate school to consider this option;

encourage good students to plan earlier on going to graduate school, whether or not they end up following this program;

identify students with strong research potential and provide an opportunity for them to start research sooner, during their undergraduate career, on projects led by Rutgers faculty. Such students may be expected to go on to earn a Ph.D. degree, either at Rutgers or elsewhere.

To attract the best students, the program:

• provides a clearer path of integration between the undergraduate and graduate study program at Rutgers, which allows students to complete the M.S. degree one semester sooner, on the average;
• facilitates entry into the graduate program by relying on the faculty's evaluation rather than standardized exams, such as GREs;
• designates membership in it as an honor

Learning outcomes:

will be prepared to contribute to a rapidly changing field by acquiring a thorough grounding in the core principles and foundations of computer science (e.g., techniques of program design, creation, and testing; key aspects of computer hardware; algorithmic principles).
-will acquire a deeper understanding on (elective) topics of more specialized interest, and be able to critically review, assess, and communicate current developments in the field.
-will be prepared for the next step in their careers, for example, by having done a research project (for those headed to graduate school), a programming project (for those going into the software industry), or some sort of business plan (for those going into startups).
