The applicant for admission to study for the degree Master of Arts with a major in English shall present evidence of successful completion of at least 24 semester hours of undergraduate English above the freshman level, including survey courses in both English and American literature; one course in linguistics, modern grammar, or the history of the English language; and one upper division writing course. Students not presenting evidence of sufficient background in the above areas shall be required to complete one or more undergraduate courses as a condition of acceptance.

English, Literature Emphasis

The Master of Arts degree with a Literature emphasis is designed for students who enjoy the challenge of analyzing great works of British, American, and international authors, of engaging with the ideas and themes found in the best that has been thought and said, and of tracing the grand arcs of literary history. This graduate level English degree is available can be earned by achieving one of three options.

English, Professional Writing Emphasis

The new MA in English with an Emphasis in Professional Writing began in the fall of 2017. The program features classes in writing for the public, such as grant writing; writing for electronic environments, such as digital literacy’s and new media writing; writing for publication, such as editing and document design; and theories of writing. This degree will help you develop the flexibility necessary for a wide variety of writing occupations.

Jump Start Option

The MA in English with an Emphasis in Professional Writing also features the "Jump Start" option. In this option, Pittsburg State juniors and seniors who meet certain eligibility guidelines may take up to three additional courses that will count toward the MA Emphasis in Professional Writing. The Jump Start option will allow students to decrease the typical time to degree by at least a semester.

English, Creative Writing Emphasis

There are few things in life as personally fulfilling as writing a story or poem others want to read. The best authors understand how to use the tools of their craft to convey emotion, and move people to action. If you want to take your writing career to the next level, or simply desire a better understanding of poetry and prose construction, a Master of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing is for you.

The M.A. in English with a Creative Writing emphasis grounds students in successful strategies to create their own fiction and poetry. Students also analyze the fiction and poetry of other writers to determine how they create successful work.

Pittsburg Sate graduates have been accepted into prestigious M.F.A. and Ph.D. programs throughout the nation, and have received the Truman Capote Fellowship at the Iowa Writers Workshop, and the John Grisham Fellowship at the University of Mississippi.
