The Department of Theatre offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre, providing you with a broad range of courses in both the theory and practice of acting and drama.

The department annually produces four main stage and studio productions for the campus community. Acting, design and technology opportunities are available to you starting freshman year. Our faculty are working professionals who are devoted to mentoring and educating their students, as well as maintaining their scholarly and/or creative work off campus.

Career paths

This degree is designed to prepare students for careers in both theatre and the general entertainment industry – professional arenas with unique natures that require students to have a working knowledge of every component of the profession in order to succeed. Our graduates have pursued successful careers in a variety of fields: Designers; Directors; Actors; Technical Directors & Technicians; Film & Television; Teaching Theatre Managers; Writers Entertainment Law; Advertising; Communication; Sales.

Highlights

The Department of Theatre offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre with three areas of emphasis: Performance, Design and Technology, and Comprehensive. All three provide you with a broad range of theatre courses in both theory and practice. The department annually produces four main stage productions in the well-equipped Vivia Locke Theatre and two to four studio productions in the Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre. Acting, as well as design and technology opportunities, are available to you starting your freshman year. The Theatre faculty is comprised of working professionals, who are devoted to mentoring and educating their students, as well as maintaining their scholarly and/or creative work off campus. Under the tutelage of the professional faculty, you are encouraged to participate in professional internships and conferences and to pursue summer employment opportunities in theatre as soon as possible.

Courses to expect for this major include Stage Technology, Acting, Stage Makeup and Costume Design.

Opportunities: Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre, seats 75 and is home to the Studio Season productions of the department. These shows are often student directed and designed; The Costume Lab is the location of all costume design and construction courses and labs. All costumes for departmental shows are constructed in the Costume Lab; The Scene Lab is the location of all stage construction courses and labs. It is fully equipped with wood and steel working machinery for set and property construction; Design Lab doubles as a computer lab which all theatre students have access to. The Design Lab, which features both PC and Mac computers, is equipped with the latest design software and large format printers.
