The MTheol Theology is an integrated undergraduate Master’s degree, building from a broad foundation of theological, pastoral and cross-cultural studies in the first three years to an area of in-depth specialisation of your choice in the fourth year.

This programme has your ministry in mind. You go deeper in order to explain things more simply and clearly. You are not left at the end with a brilliant theology that won’t make sense to anybody in the pew. That’s why many of the modules cultivate and assess the ability to articulate profound truths in accessible and powerful ways.

Ordinands who are granted direct entry into the third year of the programme will complete a series of weekly placements during their training along with a selection of modules at Levels 4 and 5 which provide specific Anglican training (as approved by the Church of England). These requirements are in addition to the standard components of Years 3 and 4 set out below, and so, over the two years of training, you would be required to over-credit by a total of 20 credits.

Programme information

The programme is designed with a variety of Christian ministry roles in mind. All students benefit from a core of compulsory modules that provide a biblical, theological and practical grounding. And all students, in conversation with their sending church, and for full time students their personal tutor, have an opportunity to choose electives that help them make progress towards their specific ministry goals (e.g., as pastors, teachers, elders, leaders, women’s workers, cross-cultural workers, youth, children and family workers). For the DipHE (the first two years of the MTheol), the electives comprise 60 credits out of the total of 240 credits required.

Learning, teaching and assessment

The College aims to provide a learning experience which is demanding and exhilarating, reflecting the highest academic standards as well as excellence in pedagogy. The College has been commended for its commitment to integrating the academic and practical aspects of training for ministry vocations. Additionally, it has been recognised that the College excels in teaching biblical languages and biblical studies. Students experience this through a rich and varied learning experience which encompasses lectures, seminars, language classes, field trips, placements and a range of formative and summative assessments. Through these assessments, the College aims to provide all students with an equal opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of Threshold Learning Outcomes (at module level) and Programme Learning Outcomes. Underlying all of the College’s programmes is a commitment both to information and to transformation, and a belief that the sub-disciplines within Theology are integrated within the framework provided by scripture, which can and does speak into every area of life.

The first two years of the programme are in effect the DipHE Theology and aim to cover in outline the main sub-disciplines of theology: biblical studies, doctrine, history and practical ministry. Study is foundational in the first year, and then progresses to a deeper engagement in the second year.
