Intellectual property is an exciting and increasingly important area of law, particularly internationally and EU-wide. On this course you'll have opportunities to explore intellectual property law in both UK and EU contexts, together with the links to competition law and sport.

About LLM Intellectual Property

You will explore the internationally important area of Intellectual Property Law and learn how intellectual property rights impinge on many commercial areas.

What you'll study

The LLM Intellectual Property Law offers the opportunity to gain significant insight into the legal frameworks and principles underpinning this burgeoning sector.

LLM Intellectual Property Law will support you in gaining a high-level appreciation of the scope of intellectual property law and the principles and rationale which underpin the law. This is reinforced by developing awareness of a range of critiques which pertain to the sector, including those relating to the scope and applicability of the various rights. Based on this you will develop your appreciation through developing expertise in the application of these rights in key contexts, in particular the International and European Union approaches to intellectual property rights. In respect of the latter, the inherent tension between the creation of monopoly rights and the European Union’s single market regulations are explored.

You will explore important contemporary issues such as the control and exploitation of personal data, and the application of intellectual property law in the context of medical innovation.

Assessment

In each case modules are assessed through one piece of course work. This usually takes the form of a problem- or essay-style question, but will vary by module. You can submit and receive feedback on assessments over the course of each module.

Your dissertation will be assessed through a research based written assignment of 12,000 words. The topic that you choose for your dissertation should be relevant to the course specialism and the chosen title will be subject to approval by the Course Leader.

Additionally, you will complete a reflective report consisting of pre-set questions, each with a maximum word count attributed to it; approximately 250 words, i.e. 1000 words in total. Your reflective report will be assessed by way of competence or non-competence.
