An English degree from NSU teaches valuable skills that transfer easily across disciplines and careers. As an NSU English student, you’ll learn to write clearly, read critically, connect ideas meaningfully, understand diversity, relate historical context to human interactions, and see others empathetically.

NSU's English program is structured with different areas of emphasis to help you tailor your major to suit your needs and career goals.

At NSU, English B.S.Ed. majors complete courses required for the teaching emphasis and professional education course work in secondary education.

NSU's English degree pairs well with other specializations and students are encouraged to take minors, or even to double major, in areas such as history, business, political science, and art design.

CAREERS

In addition to teaching in middle or high schools, an NSU English education degree can set you on the path to teach at the college level or teach English as a second language in the U.S. or abroad. Teachers who are geographically mobile and obtain licensure in more than one subject are likely to have a distinct employment advantage.

Applicants to NSU must: Rank in the top 60 percent of their high school graduating class; or achieve an ACT composite score of 18 or above; SAT score of 950 or SAT Reasoning Test Math and Critical Reading sub scores total of 870 or above or Earn a GPA of at least 2.6 on a 4.0 scale in all high school courses and complete the following required courses with a cumulative grade of "C" or higher (GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale): Four years of English or ACT English sub-test score of 18 or above or AP English score of 3 or above; Three years of advanced mathematics: Or ACT math sub-test score of 20 or above or AP calculus score of 3 or above; Three years of laboratory science or ACT science reasoning sub-test score of 17 or above or AP science score of 3 or above. English Language Requirements: TOEFL IBT (61-70 or above); TOEFL PBT (525 or above); IELTS (5.5 or above); PTE Academic (41 or above).
