The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies is offered as a 3 year full-time or 4-year qualification with a Professional Placement Year. It is designed to transform you into a professional early childhood educator – that could be as a practitioner, researcher, policymaker or activist.Early Childhood Studies at New City College takes a multi-disciplinary approach. Concepts such as ‘play’, ‘development’, ‘democracy’, ‘ethics’, ‘social justice’ and ‘leadership’ are all examined critically in core modules. At each level of study, you will build your knowledge about babies, young children and childhood to develop an understanding of early childhood provision in both local and international contexts. There is also a good range of other modules that introduce you to the many facets of early childhood research and practice. Havering Colleges, New City College is registered with the Office for Students.How will I be taught?Each module is led by a well-qualified academic who will introduce you to the significant developments in the field including, in many cases, their own cutting-edge research. You will have a personal tutor who will help you to reflect on your areas of strength and identify actions to progress in your academic studies. By the end of your course, you will have the choice of experiencing a range of placements, careers guidance, and the opportunity to meet the ‘full and relevant’ national criteria for Early Years Educators. As an Early Childhood Studies graduate you will possess many skills that employers seek.The BA (Hons) Early Years, Education and Care is validated by BathSpa University. This Degree will equip you with the understanding, skills and knowledge to enhance your performance in your current role and to enable career progression. Your programme of study will be closely linked to the workplace. This qualification is a classroom-based course. What are my progression opportunities? On completion of this course, you could further your career through professional postgraduate study for example: Teaching, Early Years, Speech and Language Therapy. Previous students have gone into the above professions as well as Early Intervention Services and local authority work.Course Duration and Delivery StructureThis is a full time course, and the course is delivered over a period of three or four years, depending upon the chosen pathway. The teaching year begins in September and ends in June. A typical student registered in full-time attendance mode will study the equivalent of 120 credits over one academic year and will attend College for one day per week. Students will either be working or volunteering within an educational setting and be able to commit to self-study alongside the programme. Students must be employed or working voluntarily within an early years setting for a minimum of 12 hours per week. Placements need to be sourced by the student. The course will take place at our Ardleigh Green Campus.
