The Massey BA (Social Anthropology) will give you a different perspective on the world, global culture and society.

Studying social anthropology will develop your understanding of other cultures and ethnic groups. It will show you how your way of life is just one of many possible ways of being human. You will learn to challenge your existing beliefs and put yourself in others’ shoes.

Study a wide range of subjects

At Massey you will study topics such as politics, globalisation, inequality, human-environmental relations, human rights, indigenous peoples, racism, visual culture, healing systems, food, gender, and ritual and religion.

Get out into the field

Discover how anthropologists study cultural differences through fieldwork that examines societies across the globe, from hunter-gatherers to industrial nation-states. Massey staff and students are currently researching in Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa and New Zealand.

The minimum academic entry requirement is successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. Cambridge International Examination or Advanced International Certificate of Education (CIE /AICE) A or AS levels, a minimum of 120 points from approved syllabus group list. And a minimum D grade or better in syllabuses from at least three different in each of at least 3 different syllabus groups (excluding Thinking Skills), as well as an E or better in AS English and a D grade in IGCSE or GCSE Mathematics. Taken in countries other than New Zealand (excluding United Kingdom): 3 A-levels including at least 1 C grade or better. A result in General Studies cannot be included among the 3 on which the application is based. English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0 (no band less than 5.5); TOEFL iBT- 80 overall (min 19 in Writing); PTE Academic - 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills); Cambridge English - 169.
