The BSEd in Middle Grade Education is grounded in the belief that outstanding teachers are prepared for the classroom when they participate in a program that emphasizes high academic achievement, the importance of each child as an individual, and an understanding of pertinent theories of learning and education.

In this program, students participate in experiences in school settings beginning in their freshman year. These field experiences are designed to develop enduring understandings, knowledge, and skills for middle school teaching and rigorously prepare students for the one-year internship, the capstone experience of the program. As a part of this program, students have extensive opportunities to work with young adolescents through a wide range of learning experiences in school and community settings.

Students select a concentration in one of four areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science or Social Science. Upon completion of the program, students will receive an Illinois Professional Educator License with endorsements to teach the identified area for grades 5 – 8 and English as second Language grades 5 – 8.

• Earn a certificate to teach worldwide through the International Baccalaureate Organization.
