Counselors have the power to lead social change by improving the mental health of individuals, couples, families, and groups at every stage of life. Through real-world experience, Governors State’s Master of Arts in Counseling equips you to diagnose, consult, and evaluate clients; provide preventive intervention; and bring about life-changing results through counseling.

In the Counseling M.A. program, you will choose from one of three sequences—Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling; or School Counseling (K-12)—to concentrate your studies in your primary field of interest. Many of our students will gain practical experience through our on-campus counseling lab that serves the surrounding community. In addition to completing at least 100 hours of a practicum experience in the lab–or in school systems for school counseling students–every student must also complete a 600 hour internship.

Counselors work in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics and hospitals, corporations, governmental social agencies, public and private schools, community colleges, community intervention programs, and correctional institutions.

Delivery Format

Achieve your Master of Arts in Counseling in as little as three years. Governors State’s 60-credit hour Counseling M.A. is offered in a fully on-campus and hybrid format. Flexible evening classes along with virtual online classes allow you to customize your schedule to fit the demands of your daily life.

Applicants must: have earned (or will have earned by the term they wish to enroll) a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, and have been in good standing at the last institution attended, and have satisfied collegial and/or major criteria, if applicable, for graduate study in a specific major. IELTS, applicants must meet the minimum acceptable score of 6.0 academic versions. TOEFL score 550 on paper based with 54 on reading, 58 on writing, 55 on Listening, 213 on computer based with 21 on reading, 24 on writing, 21 on Listening and IBT score of 80 with 20 on reading, 20 on writing, 20 on Listening and 20 on speaking; Pearson Test of English PTE Exam score 53: Listening - 53; Speaking - 53; Reading - 53; Writing - 53.
