In this specialisation you will develop an understanding of the cognitive psychology of learning and investigate how this can be applied to problems that arise in learning and teaching.

This specialisation may interest classroom teachers, special education teachers, lecturers or tutors in further or higher education, private tutors or trainers and those wanting to understand their own learning processes. These courses do not lead to teacher registration in South Australia.

This specialisation can be taken fully online.

To qualify for the Master of Education (Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice), a student must complete 72 units, including approved credit, with a grade of P or NGP or better, according to the following program of study.

Students are expected to discuss their option topics with the specialisation coordinator. The final program of study must be approved by the specialisation coordinator.

What you will study

The program aims to introduce you to current theory and research in the application of cognitive psychology to educational issues. You will apply this theory and research to critically examine problems in cognition and instruction, consider the influences of teaching actions on learning, and examine your own teaching and develop evidence-based models for practice.

Topics cover areas such as motivation, cognition and metacognition, teaching to develop motivation, the psychology of learning and instruction, and applications of psychology to learning and instruction.

The courses are designed to meet the increasing demand for professional development of current teachers and other professionals. The programs are not designed to be an initial preparation for teaching and do not lead to teacher registration.
