This part time online programme will develop a further understanding of inclusion and Special Educational Needs and will allow students to progress in providing education and support within the areas of inclusion and Special Education. It will meet the needs of practitioners who work as Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator.

This distance learning programme will equip students with the skills to identify developments within the sector and develop their competence to continue to keep their knowledge current into their professional role.

The aims of the programme are to:

• Up skill the workforce who work with children with SEND
• Provide a critical overview of the political, economic and social drivers that inform policy and legislation
• Develop practitioner confidence in taking responsibility in implementing appropriate interventions for children with SEND as part of a single and multi-agency approach.
• Develop reflective practitioners who can have an impact on the development of high-quality provision for children with SEND
• To challenge the inequalities that exist for some children and their families.

Additionally, students are expected to engage in 12 hours a week private study to access study materials and engage with wider reading and research. This course is studied 100% online.

Participants are encouraged to make links between theory and their own practice and become reflective practitioners who can think proactively and strategically about provision for pupils with special and additional learning needs. There are various assessments such as posters presentations, essays, small-scale research and case studies. You will gain a firm grounding in understanding a range of special educational needs. Some of our postgraduates have gone on to become advanced skills teachers, special educational needs and disability coordinators, assistant head teachers and head teachers. This course will help you develop a range of transferrable skills that are desirable in a wide variety of careers. These skills include the knowledge of theories, legislation, policy and practice, computer literacy, planning and time management and written communication. You will also demonstrate your ability to think critically and to design and carry out small-scale research. Students will also achieve PgCert and PgDip exit awards during this course.
