Deakin's Master of International Accounting (MIA) provides graduates of any discipline with the opportunity to undertake studies towards gaining membership of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). An ACCA accounting qualification is highly regarded by employers in many countries.

As part of the MIA course, you will study subjects such as introductory accounting, financial reporting, management accounting, commercial and taxation law, corporate auditing, accounting theory, information systems for business, governance, finance, and business economics.

Course structure

To complete the Master of International Accounting, students must attain a total of 16 credit points consisting of 15 credit points of core units and 1 credit point of elective units. Most units (think of units as 'subjects') are equal to 1 credit point.

Students are introduced to research tools and techniques in core units of the course where they learn analytic skills and the practical application of those skills in professional contexts. They must also complete advanced level units and a capstone unit that require them to integrate the skills learnt over their course of study and produce applied pieces of research with reference to prevailing literature.

Career outcomes

Graduates of the Master of International Accounting course would typically seek employment in areas of accounting such as financial accounting, auditing, taxation, management accounting, public sector accounting, forensic accounting, or business advisory services. The course will provide graduates with the opportunity to work in a wide range of different environments, depending on their own skills and preferences. Accountants can choose to work in large, medium or small public practice firms, industry and commerce, government and public sector organisations, management consultancies, banking and financial services, not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) or educational organisations. Many also set up their own businesses.

Professional recognition

On successful completion of the MIA course, you will not only gain exemption from all nine ‘fundamental’ level ACCA papers, but also have the necessary knowledge to undertake the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) six ‘professional’ level examinations. It is important to note that each MIA unit that is aligned with ACCA’s professional examinations (MAA726, MAA795, MAF755, MAA764, MAA765), will be delivered in six-hour segments each teaching week, totalling 66 contact hours over the trimester. At the end of Trimesters 2 and 3, those who wish to sit the ACCA exam will be required to attend intensive master classes over one week for each of the six units. These master classes are valuable and designed to help you succeed in your ACCA examinations.
