When you study computer systems, you’ll learn to design operating and control systems for space vehicles, or implement complex computer security systems. You’ll become an expert in hardware and software integration. You’ll understand the language of interfaces and the input and output devices that connect the computer to the world. As a computer scientist, this expertise will give you a key role in the development of hardware and software systems.

Our state-of-the-art labs for high-performance computing, networks and artificial intelligence will give you experience with the tools you will use in the field. Through labs, lectures and projects, you’ll also:

• Design and optimize large industrial software systems.
• Extend systems-oriented applications such as networking stacks, operating systems and database managements systems.
• Explore the integration of software with the latest computing hardware, including multi-core and cloud computing models.

After graduation you’ll have the knowledge, skill and passion to succeed in any number of computing careers this versatile degree prepares you for.

The Computer Systems option provides a structured program in both computer software and computer hardware. Knowledge of the various aspects of digital hardware, and of interfaces between the computer and those input and output devices which connect it to the world, will enable graduates of the Computer Systems option to co-operate with computer engineers in the development of new hardware and related software.

We offer an honours program to computer science students with high academic standing. You may apply to the honours program once you have completed 30 credits.

Co-op program

The Computer Science Co-op program gives you the chance to complete paid work terms that last 12 to 16 weeks. As a Co-op student, you will assist in projects designed and implemented by professionals and may also:

• Analyze and develop computer solutions
• Design and create new software, and modify and test existing software used in a broad range of businesses and industries
• Plan and implement computer security systems for database access control

After your degree

Given the range of applications in use today, computer science alumni have established careers in a range of sectors including health care, communications, manufacturing, banking, retail, electronics and entertainment.
