What is information technology?

Information technology is the design, development and management of computer hardware, software and systems. It also covers the administration and support of networks and databases in a business context. Qualified IT professionals perform essential functions within businesses, from ensuring staff have functioning computers, to building and maintaining complex software systems, networks or apps.

Information technology is a rapidly growing field, with computers and digital services embedded into our lives. Businesses are looking to adapt and evolve to keep up with this fast-changing industry. This makes graduates of information technology degrees in high demand around the world, with many opportunities in a wide range of sectors.

About the course

Our three-year undergraduate degree in Information Technology will give you practical experience and expert knowledge needed to succeed in this fast-moving industry. Teaching involves industry-standard hardware and software methods and techniques. You will learn essential problem-solving skills, and develop your creativity to find innovative solutions to complex challenges.

Following a flexible course structure, you'll study 24 subjects, including:

10 core subjects

6 unrestricted elective subjects

An IT specialisation comprising six compulsory subjects and two restricted electives.

A specialisation is made up of eight compulsory subjects in a related area of IT. Choose your specialisation area below and view the subjects you can study within each.

Career opportunities

Over recent decades the ICT sector in Australia has continued to grow. Despite this growth in opportunities, the number of ICT domestic graduates has fallen. As a result of this IT skills gap, employers in Australia are increasingly looking to recruit international graduates from Australian Universities and professionals from overseas.
