What is business management?

A business manager at a top level is responsible for overseeing a company or organisation’s overall activities, while heads of departments and team leaders oversee day-to-day operations. People working in business management are responsible for ensuring that employee productivity is aligned with the goals of the organisation.

Business managers are leaders in their organisation, and need to be able to motivate and inspire staff to excel in their roles. It is important to have both interpersonal skills and commercial awareness to be a successful manager. Management skills include problem solving, communication and decision making, as well as strategy development and financial planning.

About this course

Our three-year course is designed for students who wish to pursue a management career in industry, corporate companies, government or NGOs. Through a mix of theory and soft skill development and application, you will be prepared for all aspects of business operations. You will hone your ability to work with people from a strategic and international perspective, preparing you for employment in regional, national and international organisations. Studying this course you will understand how to approach strategy, planning, managing organisational change and business operations.

This course is also offered at Charles Sturt University campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga.

What will you study?

You must successfully complete 24 subjects to graduate, which includes:

16 core subjects

8 unrestricted electives or electives for Joint Study.

Choosing your subject

As part of your degree, you must ensure that you complete:

no more than twelve level one subjects

a minimum of five level three subjects.

Your Course Coordinator can advise you on available courses and prerequisites. We recommend you complete the subject levels in order of difficulty.

Industry recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of professional organisations such as the Australian Institute of Management.

As a graduate, you will be eligible for a wide range of careers in the public and private sectors, from financial services to government and not-for-profit.
