Professionals working with children and youth face many challenges involving complex relationships with families, communities and governments. Childhood and Youth Studies at Carleton prepares you for careers in this demanding area. The program was originally developed for graduates of Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs, but the broader scope of the new curriculum allows for entry into the program without an ECE diploma. Through core courses in childhood and youth studies, as well as other relevant disciplines, you will learn about a wide range of topics (e.g., children’s rights, policy and practice) pertaining to children and youth in Canada and around the world.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) (General)

A total of 15.0 credits are needed for the Bachelor of Arts (General) program. You will study the same topics as students in the Honours program and will select elective courses in collaboration with the Childhood and Youth Studies Coordinator. Upon graduation, you may meet the requirements to apply to a BEd degree program.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

The Honours program in Childhood and Youth Studies is an intensive, in-depth study of the field, and requires a total of 20.0 credits for completion. You will study a range of topics that will be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective through courses offered within the Childhood and Youth Studies program, as well as courses offered in other departments. You will also take a science or computer science credit, as well as an arts and social sciences credit. You will choose your own elective credits, though the courses must be approved by the Childhood and Youth Studies Coordinator.

Future opportunities

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Childhood and Youth Studies can help qualify you for a variety of professions in a wide range of settings such as, for example, community-based organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, humanitarian and philanthropic organizations, childcare centers and schools, and the private sector. Note: an ECE diploma is required for careers in Early Childhood Education.

High school graduation is the normal minimum level of study to be considered for admission to the first year of an undergraduate program at Carleton University. Academic performance in previous studies is the main determining factor for admission to undergraduate degree programs. Applicants must need the full IB diploma (three subsidiary [SL] and three higher level [HL] subjects), with a minimum of 28 points (please note that some programs are more competitive, so will require higher scores). Applicants may have one subject with a grade of 3, provided it is offset by a grade of 5 or better. Prerequisite subjects must have a grade of 4 or better. Early/conditional offers may be available with predicted results. IB students may be awarded advanced standing (transfer) credit for HL subjects with a grade of 5 or better subject to the discretion of the appropriate faculty, to a maximum of 3.0 credits. English language requirement: Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Minimum score of 70 overall with a minimum score of 60 on each band; Internet Based (iBT) TOEFL: 86 (22 in writing and speaking, 20 reading and listening); IELTS (Academic): 6.5 IELTS (min 6.0 each band); Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 60 (min 60 in each Communicative Skill); Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85 (min. score of 80 on each section).
