The degree in Biomedical Engineering focuses on Biomechanics, Bioinstrumentation, Biofluids, Biomaterials and Bioinformatics.

Students will receive a comprehensive education in biomedical engineering, as well as the sciences and humanities, and will be able to communicate effectively. They will be able to design equipment and devices that meet performance, cost, time, safety, and quality requirements. They will understand professional responsibilities and will be able to analyze the social and ethical implications of their work.

This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the biomedical engineering field. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest.

Career Possibilities

Design equipment and devices, such as artificial internal organs, replacements for body parts, and machines for diagnosing medical problems
Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment
Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment
Train clinicians and other personnel on the proper use of equipment
Work with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists to research the engineering aspects of the biological systems of humans and animals

Generally, applicants will qualify for consideration for first-time freshman admission if they meet the following requirements: Have graduated from high school, have earned a Certificate of General Education Development (GED) or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE). Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Paper-based 500; Internet-based (iBT) 61, IELTS 5.5 each sub-section, Pearson Test of English 43.
