Our MRes Psychology covers:

the critical appreciation of existing research and research methods in a chosen research area
designing, managing and reporting on an extended research project
subject-specific IT skills.

It enables you to conduct extended supervised research in a focused area within contemporary psychology, such as psychosocial studies, brain and cognitive development, or computational cognitive neuroscience. You will have the opportunity to attend research seminars organised by the Department of Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck and a number of other local research centres and institutes.

The programme is designed for graduates in psychology and related disciplines who have prior research skills training and who are seeking to complete a specific, well-defined research project. If you would like to carry out research in any area of contemporary psychology, either at PhD level or in the private sector, it will prepare you with a range of appropriate research skills and experiences.

CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY

Graduates can pursue careers in psychology, education, human resources and management. Possible professions include clinical psychologist, further education lecturer, or human resources officer. This degree may also be useful in becoming a counsellor, careers adviser, or educational psychologist.

Students will requires a UK undergraduate degree with a 2:2 classification, they will typically need to have one of the following: a Bachelor's degree (Xueshi) from a 211, 985 or top national university with an overall average grade of 70%; a Bachelor's degree from a national university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Bachelor's degree from a high-ranking private university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Master's degree with an overall average grade of 60%. To study a Master's degree that requires a UK undergraduate degree with a 2:1 classification, they will typically need to have one of the following: a Bachelor's degree (Xueshi) from a 211, 985 or top national university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Bachelor's degree from a national university with an overall average grade of 80%; a Bachelor's degree from a high-ranking private university with an overall average grade of 80%; a Master's degree with an overall average grade of 70%. If they do not meet these criteria, they can apply for Birkbeck’s International Foundation Programme, which acts as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate study, preparing students to study a Master’s degree in the UK. There are progression pathways onto various courses at Birkbeck.
