Our LLM International Economic Law, Justice and Development is one of the few postgraduate programmes in the UK to address the law, institutions and practice which constitute global and local economies from an avowedly critical perspective, part- and full-time, in face-to-face evening sessions. Taught by established experts on theory and practice in the field, it introduces you to a broad geographical and institutional spectrum, from Latin America to Africa, from the European Union to the World Bank, and onwards to the World Social Forum. It is particularly well suited to (current and aspiring) lawyers and non-lawyers within non-governmental organisations, government departments and in-house corporate social responsibility departments, who wish to critically reflect on their role as practitioners.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations, although this will vary from course to course - on some of our courses, assessment is entirely by coursework. The methods of assessment on this course are specified below under 'Methods of assessment on this course'. You will need to allow time to complete coursework and prepare for exams.

CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY

Graduates go on to careers in the charity sector, local and national government, and law. Possible professions include barrister, solicitor, or civil service administrator. This degree is also useful in a variety of roles within charities, focusing on international development, as an adviser to a private company, or as part of a specialist law firm.

Students will requires a UK undergraduate degree with a 2:2 classification, they will typically need to have one of the following: a Bachelor's degree (Xueshi) from a 211, 985 or top national university with an overall average grade of 70%; a Bachelor's degree from a national university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Bachelor's degree from a high-ranking private university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Master's degree with an overall average grade of 60%. To study a Master's degree that requires a UK undergraduate degree with a 2:1 classification, they will typically need to have one of the following: a Bachelor's degree (Xueshi) from a 211, 985 or top national university with an overall average grade of 75%; a Bachelor's degree from a national university with an overall average grade of 80%; a Bachelor's degree from a high-ranking private university with an overall average grade of 80%; a Master's degree with an overall average grade of 70%. If they do not meet these criteria, they can apply for Birkbeck’s International Foundation Programme, which acts as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate study, preparing students to study a Master’s degree in the UK. There are progression pathways onto various courses at Birkbeck.
